Why we must be Baptized
In the Old Testament, the Levitical Priests and Jewish people practiced baptism through ritual cleansing. John's baptism of repentance in the New Testament continued the pattern and served as a type and shadow of cleansing from sin that is only offered through Christ Jesus. Jesus emphasized the importance of baptism by being baptized himself by John at the start of His ministry. The act of baptism is symbolic of the believer being baptized into Christ's death and upon ascension from the water, being raised into the newness of life.
Romans 6:4, Modern English Version (MEV)
4 Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, so shall we also be united with Him in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man has been crucified with Him, so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we should no longer be slaves to sin. 7 For the one who has died is freed from sin.
